Face Off - Behind the News
More frequently that before leading UAE newspapers reports the risk of online transactions that implies an indirect negativity in the boom of the e-commerce in the country. Are these news write-ups driven to warn the public for a known reality of the internet crimes or is there an underground reason to drive the UAE e-commerce market to another segment? Or is it both? The sudden boom of the UAE e-commerce maybe traced back immediately after the release of a research conducted by the Arab Advisors Group in mid-2007 whereby a whooping US$ 1.15B were spent by the UAE internet users. A massive promotion of e-cards, e-payments and the likes had been prevalent in the UAE. The encouragement of the promotional & exhibitor media to direct the public in this sector is indirectly implied. These cards are not credit cards. These are specialized cards that maybe used to shop online instead of the normal credit cards. Some of these cards are pre-paid, refillable and acts as your online fund. Shopping online is something that falls back to the responsibility of the online shopper to check for necessary information, security and pre-caution before disclosure of sensitive information to the merchant. This entails personal responsibility. However, a person with lack of knowledge may be vulnerable to attacks. Everyday, atleast one unsolicited mail is received in our inbox in the whole world. A lot goes to an extent of “providing fund transfer amounting to billions of dollars”. A lot of times, we really wonder whether there are still people out there who grabs this kind of bait. The only person in control of his exposure to online crimes and online risks is himself alone. One should be in control and this is achieved by broadening your knowledge in the realities of online transactions and the risks that are attached to it. When technology advances, the unethical hackers advance in-line with it. It is a continuous race. It is a known reality. News that surrounds a “supposedly” known fact may lead to a feeling of fear towards “the normal way of transacting online” and might builds trust “when one is using a special cards payment system”. Where is this market heading to? Or shall I rather put the sentence “Where is this market, through the influence of media, leading the public to?” |
